Primary picture symbols page to get a gray scale table

Primary picture symbols page

In order to fully transform our primary picture symbols page, we needed a table of gray scale indicators. Or more properly, black and white and gray scale indicators. The page currently uses tables of various categories of indicators that, due to shear numbers — over 800 entries — has become impossible to search for the average driver.

The new table is now ready and we will next work to transform the page.

Since the advent of message centers in instrument panels, most manufacturers use the space for trouble and accessory indicators as well as various text messages for drivers. In black and white and gray scale, these indicators are useful to show systems on standby or as active with nothing to report.

We hadn’t appreciated just how many we had created over the years.

We’ve always had a table for red indicators, another for yellow/amber/orange indicators and another combining green and blue offerings. And while we had been making the gray scale counterparts, we had simply used them within the categories we are moving away from. The new table was an eye opening experience.

We started with with what we thought was a generous 25 rows. When we were done, we had 89 rows and a full 150+ entries copied over from their categories!

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble – a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

You can see our primary picture symbols page here.

Jeep symbols page now color coded

JJeep logoeep symbols page

One of our most visited pages, the Jeep symbols page, is now the third to be aligned by color. We started what is big change on the site with Infiniti, finished the family adding Nissan, and will move through the pages visited the most.

This page features over 100 entries, one of the most heavily populated pages. The number made the change a tough one, but slogged through. A surprisingly large number of green and blue indicators can be seen in the page.

Jeep has begun some electrification, adding to the overall number. Note that we do try to order them by order of importance within the color groups.

Nissan symbols page now color coded

Nissan logoNissan symbols page

The Nissan symbols page is now the second to be aligned by color. We started what is big change on the site with Infiniti, and thought it would be most appropriate to finish the “family”.

The Nissan page features over 90 entries, about 20 more the Infiniti page. This added a degree of difficulty in the change, but we see paths to simplifying a difficult transition.

Returning to the idea that Nissan uses more indicators than its higher end brand, it is certainly not what we expect. High end brands in general feature more advanced technology, resulting in additional symbols. We anticipate the brand will catch its sibling when the new line line of electric vehicles is introduced in the coming years, as we discussed here.

DashboardSymbols.com getting a facelift

DashboardSymbols.comDashboardSymbols.com

Earlier this year, we noted in a post that DashboardSymbols.com was then hosting nearly 1,000 symbols and indicators. We have since run past the 1,000 barrier rather handily.

This got us thinking about how this impacts our visitors. How is anyone supposed to find anything in what has become a quagmire? One solution, implemented several years ago, is pages dedicated to individual manufacturers, and it is how we recommend searching the site. The other is by color.

Well, we are combining the two.

Our main page, which hosts all the images that are not text, remains a difficult mess to get through and is organized by technology categories. However, this assumes a driver even knows what tech category the mystery light he or she is searching for belongs to! This is a massive oversite on our part.

We recently updated our Infiniti page, which required but a single change to a page that is already one of the simplest on the site. That said, it still holds over 80 entries.

The result is a commitment to re-ordering everything on the site by color, and the Infiniti page is the first to reflect this. Others will follow.

It will be a long slog, as there are about 50 pages that will need the work. But the work will get done, and we sincerely hope that it simplifies your experience.

Rivian Symbols Page Debuts

Rivian Symbols

Rivian logoWe have now added a Rivian symbols page covering the R1T pick up and the R1S SUV models. We had to modify system fault, auto braking, and hood and tailgate ajar indicators to look like the company’s models. However, while the rest of the warning lights and indicators are old standards, there is a new set that stand out.

EV battery lowEV battery very lowEV battery drainedWe had to add a whole new set of charge indicators (left) to our High Voltage Battery Charge Indicators page. They are a simple elongated oval with a small amount of fill.

In yellow/amber/orange, the light warns that the charge is low. The next light, in red and with less fill, warns that the charge is very low. The final light, also in red, adds an exclamation point to pretty much tell its driver he’s out of “gas”.

Why an already existing set of indicators wasn’t used we’ll never know…

New Honda and Acura EVs Require New Dashboard Symbols for a Very Surprising Reason

Honda logoNew Dashboard Symbols

The introduction of the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX electric vehicles in 2024 required us to add several new dashboard symbols to the manufacturer’s respective pages. Well, actually, new old symbols.

This is because we already had the symbols in play — on pages for General Motors GM logo(GM) models!

What’s happened is that Honda and GM jointly developed the EVs, a collaboration that began in 2013, which was focused on hydrogen fuel. That shifted as EVs rose to prominence and in essence, GM‘s drivetrain and control systems won out. And the proof is in the owner’s manuals!

The cover pages of the Honda and Acura models are properly identified. Then comes page one…

Tables of Contents

Below in order are the table of contents for a Chevrolet Malibu (left) and the Honda Pilot (right). And then below left is the TOC for the Honda Prologue.

Chevrolet Malibu TOCThey’re difficult to read here, but the styles are clear, which is the point. The contents of the Prologue and ZDX manuals follow the GM style of presentation to the letter right on through the entire manual! Every other Honda or Acura manual for 15 years+ has a TOC and structure just like the Pilot.

Honda Pilot TOCAnd the result is the addition of at least a dozen new (at least to Honda!) symbols and telltales that fall right out of the GM playbook.

The majority of the additions are of course related to the fact that the vehicles are fully electric. So all of the resulting indicators and warnings related  to the high voltage system are found.

Honda Proloque TOCBut beyond this, many of the driver support system indicators, like lane keeping and pedestrian avoidance are in the GM style.

Remember that auto manufacturers are given great leeway in the way they present warning symbols and indicators. Only a few are identical from one manufacturer to another. Most of the time symbols end up looking similar but differ enough for us to address here on this site. Hence the fact that we host over 1,000 of them here!
