Update adds 29 new indicators to our Subaru dashboard symbols page

Subaru LogoSubaru dashboard symbols

We just finished an update of the Subaru dashboard symbols page and in the process added 29 new (to Subaru) indicators. This includes easily a dozen brand new versions of existing indicators.

The new Solterra model — Subaru‘s first EV entry — alone was responsible for 13 of the 29.

But what disturbed us is that shortly after we reported that the WRZ model forced the addition of six new images to our Drive Mode page, the Solterra review added four more. That page now holds 68 images, pretty much all variations on a theme.

Power modeEco modeSnow modeTrack modeThe new indicators are shown to the right. Track, Snow, ECO and Power modes. Each and every one of these could have been represented by a previously existing image you can see on our Drive Modes page.

The worst part of this is that Subaru itself is not consistent across models with the use of these symbols or even where and how they are displayed.

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble – a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

You can see the drive modes page here, and the Subaru symbols page here.

Subaru symbols page is now in color order

Subaru LogoSubaru symbols page

In advance of a full update, we have re-ordered the Subaru symbols page by color. We’ve have been doing this with all our dashboard symbols pages over the last several weeks, including our main dashboard symbols page.

The process for the Subaru page is now complete. We’ve have now transformed over a dozen pages to reflect the new color ordering. Forty or so to go…

The page features a number over 70 indicators, now ordered red through white or gray scale. This generally provides a “mostly serious” to “simply letting you know” range. We used the term “mostly serious” for red indicators because many legacy red symbols do not point to a problem with the vehicle.

Regardless, the new ordering provides a cleaner, simpler option for drivers searching for information.

Subaru back up entry and start review finds no changes

Subaru LogoSubaru back up

A full review of 2025 models results in no changes to the Subaru back up entry and start page. All Subaru models use the tried and true “push the start/stop button with the back of the key fob to start the vehicles. In fact all the company’s models have used this simple and sane method since they first began using the keyless start option.

Further, the company has never succumbed to the temptation to hide the key hole at the back of the driver’s door handle. While methods for getting at the device has improved tremendously over time, nearly every manufacturer now hides the key hole.

This is fine until the battery in the key fob weakens, and it will at some point. At this point the vehicle needs a back-up option to get and start the vehicle. Hopefully Subaru owners will notice the warning of a weakened battery that will appear on the instrument panel. However, everyone’s busy lives often result in replacing the battery in the fob until “tomorrow” or, because we are all inundated with information from everywhere, the notice may simply be missed.

This is where back-up methods are necessary. And welcome!

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys – or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them – that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares – even though the car had tried to warn you.

Our goal is to help you feel safe – and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible – rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages – without roadside assistance.

You can see the Subaru back up open and start page here.

Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) Indicators

Reverse Auto Brake

RAB fault indicatorRAB off indicatorBCI OFF indicatorThese are Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) System Indicator and Backup Collision Intervention System (BCI) symbols. These simple text symbols indicate the system condition. Each holds the system acronym. The first indicates a fault in the system that will require a qualified service shop. The other two indicate that the system has been switched off.

  • Before moving on, are you sure one of these is your symbol??
  • If not, you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!

RAB indicatorPark Assist SymbolPark assist offThe picture symbols here are used by some manufacturers and is seen if the system is unavailable. The sensors may be dirty, but if the light remains after cleaning, a qualified service shop will be needed.

Note that the second image with the P with lines radiating towards what looks like a sail was originally developed as a Park Assist system symbol, which can be seen here. The connection is relatively obvious with the need to be in reverse when parking in many instances. Adding the word OFF means the system is turned off.

Reverse brake assist indicatorThe symbol to the left is from a system with a slightly different name, Reverse Brake Assist. The symbol is shown when the brakes have been applied by the system. Its is shown as a car with an explosion to the right and below. Difficult to see is a down facing arrow in the explosion.

RAB is designed to help avoid collisions or reduce collision damage when the vehicle is in reverse. When functioning properly, if an obstacle is detected behind the vehicle while reversing, the system will sound a warning and may activate the vehicle’s brakes automatically. The system detects objects using sonar sensors installed in the rear bumper.

One manufacturer using the system (Subaru) goes so far as to note that if need be, the system can be overcome by pressing the accelerator to cancel the system function. The example used was being trapped on a railroad crossing with a crossing gate behind the vehicle.

Glad they thought of it…

Does Your Owner’s Manual Have a Troubleshooting Guide?

How Deep Is Your Owner’s Manual?

We’ve done a couple of owner’s manual rants and got to thinking about where the average driver might look in their respective manual if they ran into trouble, specifically with dead or dying key fobs.

So, we examined a sampling of owner’s manuals from BMW and Mini, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, including Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac, Honda and Acura, Kia and Hyundai, Land Rover and Jaguar, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Nissan and Infiniti, Subaru, Toyota and Lexus, Volkswagen and Audi and Volvo. And since we are adding this commentary, you can probably guess the results.

Mazda chapterSo lets set some parameters. Our first thought is to look for Troubleshooting chapter. So, result #1 is that not a single one of these 25 manufacturers have a chapter with this title. Only 3, Mazda (right), Toyota and Lexus, even use the word Trouble. Emergency, Roadside or Breakdown are most likely to be found, and this is a pretty short hurdle. VW raises the hurdle, with a Do It Yourself chapter that includes flat tires and dead batteries, etc. that tend to be found in the Breakdown chapters from other manufacturers.

To Index or Not to Index

Next, we looked to see if there was an index to resort to. Several, BMW, Land Rover, and Ford, for instance, have no indexes at all. So if someone out there is from these companies, please consider adding that in. On the other hand, the indexes we did find were no help at all with dead key fobs.

IndexSo, back to the our troubleshooting-like chapters. Once inside, only Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus and Subaru got this right! Setting aside for a moment the fact that the owner’s manual is most likely inside the car and the driver locked outside, at least if the driver manages to get the car open, he or she will be able to get started.

The Honda and Acura chapters point to an issue with the key fob being weak. This may not be immediately obvious to the operator, but it would be a likely spot to check out if the car wasn’t responding.

Subaru chapterSubaru (right), Lexus and Toyota chapters point directly to pages with solutions to issues with the electronic keys. Again, it may not be obvious to the driver that the key fob is the problem, but these manufacturers come the closest to nailing the problem. Titling the sections using something like what to do if the car does not respond to the electronic key would come closest to replicating exactly what the driver is experiencing.

Absolutely none of the other manufacturers point directly to the electronic keys in anything remotely like a troubleshooting chapter. To be clear, they all have the solutions shown, but the driver is left to contend with 400, 500 or 600 pages of information to get to what they need.

So for all of them, walk a mile in your customers shoes and try to think like someone who simply doesn’t understand what is wrong. Then make a Troubleshooting chapter and forget the clever titles like Handling the Unexpected or Volkswagens do it yourself chapter, which is where they keep breakdown assistance.

The closer your cars get to being rolling computers, the more relevant an actual Troubleshooting chapter will be to your customers.
