Symbol update increase the auto dimming indicators to 14

Auto dimming indicators

The Auto Dimming indicators page on our website now holds 14 different symbols. We added another malfunction indicator to what is formally known as the Automatic Headlight Dimmer and Malfunction Symbols page, which now has no less than three malfunction versions.

Auto high beam failureHeadlamp Malfunction 2Auto high beam malfunctionThe addition came via our recent Mazda update. Their version is the first one on the right. There was no particular reason that one of the other two could not have been used.

In our opinion, adding yet another image for drivers to interpret was completely unnecessary. One of the other two illustrations could easily have been used. And we’ll keep saying it: the more symbols that are created the more useless the entire warning light system becomes.

On the plus side, Mazda at least does not use a different name for the technology!

Cars are changing, and among those changes is the growing number of symbols and indicators that will invariably show up on your dashboard or instrument panel. Every year, new features are added to vehicles, each of which is accompanied by a new symbol or symbols and likely a new acronym.

At DashboardSymbols.com, our aim is to help you understand what is happening to your vehicle at the first sign of trouble – a new warning light illuminated on your instrument panel. Its all here on this website. Our first intention is to bring the latest technologies down to earth and understandable for everyday drivers.

Automatic Headlight Dimmer and Malfunction Symbols page is here. Its an interesting set of variations.

Position Lights Indicators

Position Lights

Position lights onPosition lights failureThese are Position Lights Indicator symbols. Position lights exist solely to help a vehicle get noticed. As such they are very similar to parking lights and can be versatile enough to perform either function.

  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

As they are generally low-intensity lamps, position lights are not as bright as parking or daytime lights. They are found at the front and rear of the vehicle. The versatility of modern LED lamps make it possible for them to perform multiple functions.

Emergency Assist Indicator

Emergency Assist

Emergency assist indicatorEmergency assist faultThese are Emergency Assist Indicator symbols. The emergency assist system monitors the driver and is activated when the driver is inactive. In black and white the symbol indicates the system is working, while a yellow/amber/orange indicator points to a system fault.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

If the system is activated, it first asks the driver to take over steering. If the driver does not respond, emergency assist assumes control of the vehicle and automatically brakes it to a standstill in its own lane. In a real world test, the seat belt tightened, the emergency flashers came on, the car braked to a stop and actually called 911!

Park or Tail Lamps On Indicator

Park Lamps

Tail Light Indicator CanadaThis is a Park or Tail Lamps On Indicator symbol. The latter is used in Canada. This symbol is only illuminated when all the lights, except the headlights, are in use. The lines (or eyelashes!) pointing outward are meant to symbolize light coming from the drawing of what is meant to represent a lamp.

At Last a Useful Warning on an Automotive Instrument Panel!

A Useful Warning!

Today has been cold with light snow. Coupled with the salts dropped on the pavement, this made for very dirty spray all over everyone’s car, including mine.

As a result, when I slowed to park the warning below was displayed in the center of my instrument panel…

Clean sensors warning

We have railed for years about the uselessness of warning lights as well as too many of the notifications seen in message displays. Like here, or here. But this one lays it out perfectly!

The Warning

The Park Assist symbol in the upper left is accompanied by the warning that the system’s sensors are blocked and need to be cleaned! Exactly what the driver – me, in this case – needs to do, and exactly what would logical to expect!

As far as we at DashboardSymbols.com are concerned each and every warning light that appears on an instrument panel should be accompanied by instructions that are as specific as possible.

The car’s computer knows what is needed, and its high time it communicated with its driver properly. In most cases the fix will involve a qualified service shop, but at minimum the driver will have the knowledge necessary to communicate with that shop.

Apply Parking Brake Dashboard Indicator

Apply Park Brake

Apply parking brakeThis is an Apply Parking Brake Indicator symbol. It is somewhat misleading in that it actually warns of a transmission malfunction! Vehicles with electronic shift controls may not hold the Park selection properly, prompting the warning to engage the parking brake.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our Text Symbols pages and scan again!

Do not ignore this light! If the Park function in the transmission is not properly engaged the vehicle can roll away possibly creating a risk to property and people! Use the parking brake and have the vehicle serviced at a qualified service shop as soon as possible.
