Low Coolant Warning Symbols

Low Coolant

These are Low Coolant Warning lights. With or without the arrow or “chimney”, their meaning is somewhat straightforward, in that the engine’s cooling system is low on fluid. Topping off the cooling system with the proper fluid may resolve the issue. Please do this only when the engine is cool!

However, most cooling systems are sealed and a leak or other issue may be indicated. It would be best to have the system serviced as soon as possible.

The shape of the symbols is meant to resemble a radiator and the wavy lines at the bottom indicates fluid level. The waves have also been described as mountains! They are used in a number of symbols and when seen usually means the coolant level is low.

The symbol on the left looks more like the Greek Parthenon than a radiator, but there you are. The center image includes a fan, which Certainly fits with a cooling problem.

Fuel Op Heater

This is a Fuel Operated Heater Dashboard Indicator symbol. It appears as a line with three wavy heat lines rising from it and a number alongside. The system warms up the engine and interior compartment in a gas or diesel powered vehicle without actually running the engine itself.

This is a Heated Seat On Dashboard Indicator symbol. The indicator looks like a seat with wavy heat lines radiating up from it. It is seen only when the heat function is turned on by either the driver or passenger and usually appears in gray scale.

These are Heated Steering Wheel On Indicator symbols. The indicator looks like a broken steering wheel with wavy lines radiating up from one side meant to show heat. It is seen only when the heat function is turned on by the driver and appears in yellow/amber, unless it is seen in the center display, where it is generally in gray scale.

This is a Cold Ambient Derate Mode Indicator symbol. Derate is a term used to indicate that the engine’s power has been reduced or derated. Derating the engine protects the turbocharger in cold temperatures and the indicator is shown when the system is active. The indicator appears as a fan in a duct with wavy lines and arrows below it in yellow/amber.

Deration takes place during start up and is generally associated with diesel engines. Engine power will be reduced for as long as 30 seconds depending on just how cold the ambient temperatures are, beginning at about 10°F (-12°C) and below.
