Drivetrain, Shift or Powertrain Trouble Symbols

Powertrain

Drivetrain Trouble IndicatorElectric Shift MalfunctionThese are Drivetrain, Shift or Powertrain trouble symbols or lights, and will be red or yellow/amber if it comes up. This same symbol is also used as an Electric Shift Control System Warning Indicator. It indicates a problem has been detected generally in an automatic transmission or transaxle, or its shift system. This part of the  drivetrain should be serviced as soon as possible.

  • But first, are you sure one of these is your symbol? If yes, then continue below.
  • Otherwise return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

Transmission fault indicatorThis version in black and white will be seen in the vehicle’s information display. It may indicate that the transmission is overheated or there is a park lock malfunction or a major transmission malfunction. Fortunately, a text description will be seen as well.

Transmission system indicatorThis version is also seen in black and white. It accommodates all of the shift positions with their first letter, D, P, R, etc. If all are seen together and is found to be blinking, there is an issue with the transmission the will need service as soon as possible.

There is little that is user-serviceable in these systems, so you will need the help of your dealer or authorized service center. Some manufacturers also use these to indicate an engine problem, but the Check Engine light is generally reserved for this.

More Versions

Powertrain Trouble IndicatorWhile the exclamation point is a recurring motif in automotive instrument panel symbols, the wrench is a bit more rare. Neither is it very informative unless, a) the driver is already familiar with it or, b) the driver stops and reads the owners manual. It often indicates a transmission problem, particularly if seen in red, but it also is used for other purposes. Do consult your manual.

Settings IndicatorDo not confuse the first image with the Settings Indicator symbol on the left. It is nearly identical to the bumpy circle used when referring to the transmission, but lacks any addition in the center and is shown in gray scale. The settings indicator will most generally be seen in the separate Information Display and is the what we have become used to seeing on our phones and computers.

Loose Wheel Warning Indicator

Loose Wheel

Loose wheel indicatorThis is a Loose Wheel Warning Indicator symbol. The indicator is represented by a drawing of a mounted tire and wheel with a wrench or spanner above it in red. A loose wheel is potentially very dangerous so please find a good repair shop or your dealer as soon as possible!

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

Do not ignore this warning light. If a wheel is actually loose, it could and will damage the wheel and wheel studs. Further, if it stays loose, it could cause a loss of control and lead to an accident.

AdBlue Indicator Symbols

AdBlue

AdBlue fill indicatorAdBlue indicatorThese are AdBlue Indicator symbols, which references a fluid that is necessary to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. SCR is an emissions control technology used by some diesel engine manufacturers. The indicators may appear in yellow/amber or red, depending on the severity of need.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!

So, what to do?

Both indicators include the text AdBlue, or Blue, which is a fluid used in the system. The first indicator includes the image of a downturned bottle of fluid. Another has the same words shown above a wavy line, meant to show the fluid’s level. When seen in yellow/amber, it indicates that fluid is low. If it appears in Red, the system must have fluid added, or engine emissions will be excessive.

AdBlue Maintenance IndicatorAnother adds a wrench or spanner to the AdBlue text. In yellow/amber, it indicates an issue with the system. In red, the system needs immediate attention or damage may be done to the engine and/or its emissions control systems. Only a qualified service shop or dealer will be capable of repairing the system.

Electric Park Brake and Fault Indicators

Electric Park Brake

Electric Park Brake IndicatorService electric park brakeService electric park brakeElectronically Controlled Brake WarningPark brake fault indicatorElectric parking brake faultElectric Park Brake and Fault. These symbols (left/above and below) are all or might be Electric Park(ing) Brake (EPB) Fault Indicators. The circle in brackets remains the basic image used to denote a vehicle’s brakes and in the case to the far left adds the lightning bolt, which denotes electricity. It will flash or remain lit if a fault is detected. Two indicators add the wrench or spanner below or alongside the circle to indicate that service is needed.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and or Text Symbols page and scan again!

The vehicle will be safe to drive, but the parking brake will not operate properly. Note that some manufacturers may have two indicators come on, seemingly to differentiate from other brake issues.

Electric Park Brake IndicatorPARK symbol in red

Auto EPB off indicatorElectric park brake malfunction indicatorelectric park brake troubleThe text symbols with the word PARK are actually all Electric Park Brake On Indicators as well as Fault Indicators, if the light is seen when the brake is engaged and the ignition on. The light will remain on for a short time after the ignition is turned off. The final two lights show the Auto (electric) park brake has been turned OFF. Those lights will be turned off when the system is re-engaged.

E-park brake trouble indicatorelectric park brake trouble indicatorIf however, if any of these lights flash, it may indicate a fault. In most cases, if the light goes off, the system is working properly. If it continues to flash or remains on while in motion, find a qualified service station as soon as possible. The brake may actually be engaged, so check to be sure it is not. The double symbol is found in some new (2024) Ford vehicles.

Note that the PARK symbol is also used as a mechanical Park Brake Indicator. It simply means that the park, hand or foot brake has been left on.

The text symbol holding the acronym on the left will alsoElectric Power Brake Warning Indicator indicate a fault in the system if illuminated. If this light is seen along with a Stability Control warning indicator, have the Stability Control System serviced as soon as possible. That system, not the brake, has an issue that needs to be resolved by your dealer or authorized service center.

In any case, the parking brake is also the emergency brake, so don’t wait. Have it repaired!

Engine Oil Level and Sensor Indicators

Engine Oil Level

Check oil level indicatorEngine Oil Level SensorOil pressure sensor malfunctionOil Level Sensor FailureThese are alternative to or in addition to Engine Oil Level Warning Indicator symbols. They are used by a handful of manufacturers. The added text or images point the way. Despite the yellow/amber color, these two symbols should be addressed as soon as possible. The exclamation point added to the oil can is also a Sensor Malfunction Indicator and is shown in red or yellow/amber. In these cases, the oil level cannot be sensed by the vehicle. More below…

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, continue on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The first, with the wrench or spanner on one side, is a warning to check the oil level. If the vehicle tracks the mileage since the previous oil change, the light is a warning that an oil change is due.

The second, with the word SENSOR in it, says that the vehicle can no longer warn you if the oil level or pressure drops dangerously low. The wavy line is meant to indicate ‘level’ and the drop represents oil. This symbol should frankly be red as either condition can severely damage your engine and make for a very bad day. Have your dealer or authorized service center repair it immediately.

More Versions

Engine Oil level Minimum IndicatorLow oil level indicatorThe same symbol with the added text MIN, says that the engine’s oil level has dropped to its minimum level for safe operation. Alternatively, the symbol shown as a dip stick with a drop of oil falling from it in red also indicates that the oil level is too low. In either case, add some oil as soon as you can or better yet, use this as an opportunity to get an oil and filter change.

Engine or Transmission Electronics Fault Indicator Symbols

Engine or Transmission Fault

Engine Fault IndicatorThis is an Engine or Transmission Electronics Fault Indicator symbol. Another catch-all symbol, the car with a wrench or spanner in it – which looks like a half moon on a pole – points to a problem with the engine or transmission electronics. The vehicle may default to an emergency operation mode, which provides an opportunity to bring it to your dealer or qualified service center under its own power, albeit likely reduced.

  • But first, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

Service reminder indicatorThe symbol showing a vehicle with a wrench or spanner inside it is also used as an electronics fault warning. However, some manufacturers use the very same symbol as a service reminder only. If the vehicle is operating properly, and its been a long time since its last oil service, this may be the only issue. Consult your owners manual to be sure and click here for more.

Engine electronics indicatorThis symbol is used as an Engine Electronics Fault Indicator only. It is seen as a rectangle with a wavy or ragged line inside. Whether or not any change in the vehicle operation is seen, the fault should be checked out by a good service shop as soon as possible.

Note that with either symbol, an issue with electronics can sometimes be resolved be shutting the vehicle down and restarting. Its worth a shot…

The symbol may also indicate a fault in the vehicle’s immobilizer system electronics or fuel filter issues, which will also require a qualified service center to repair. In effect, this symbol is a Check Engine Light, but some manufacturers use it to separate emissions issues (Check Engine) from the others noted here (Engine Fault).

Maintenance or Service Required Indicators

Service Required

Service Reminder IndicatorService reminder indicatorThese are Maintenance or Service Required Indicators symbols. In most cases, these symbols are used only as a reminder that routine maintenance is needed, such as an oil change, although the car on the lift (below) could suggest a more serious problem. Note immediately that some manufacturers use the image of a vehicle with the wrench inside to indicate an electrical problem! Click here for more, particularly if the vehicle is not operating properly.

Many More Versions

Service needed indicatorNote that some manufacturers use the car on in the air or on the lift symbol to indicate that one of the vehicle’s systems has failed and needs repair. In a case like this, another symbol associated with the actual system will be shown as well.

Oil Change Indicator SymbolMaintenance Required IndicatorOil service reminderOil service reminderAll routine services in a vehicle with an internal combustion engine start with a change of the engine oil and filter. The text symbol Oil Change used by some manufacturers says it in the simplest way possible, while the text MAINT REQD may be used to mean the very same thing while implying more. The last one is rather cryptic, showing a pan shape with a drop of oil above it.

However, if there is additional text shown identifying trouble with a specific vehicle system, contact your dealer or authorized service center as soon as possible.

Service interval nearService interval exceededThese red triangles indicate the approach or the passing of a Service Interval. The required service may be a common oil change or something more important such as a transmission service. The first is a single triangle, which may appear in red or yellow/amber. It indicates the approach of a service interval. The second adds another triangle inside the first. It indicates the service is past due and may also appear in red or yellow/amber.

Service ReminderIn many European vehicles, a simple wrench (spanner) image will be displayed temporarily as a service interval approaches. It will likely be in gray scale, rather than a more expected amber.

Note that if you see a wrench or spanner in red, it indicates a serious powertrain problem.
