AdBlue

These are AdBlue Indicator symbols, which references a fluid that is necessary to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. SCR is an emissions control technology used by some diesel engine manufacturers. The indicators may appear in black and white, yellow/amber/orange or red, depending on the severity of need.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Text Symbols page and scan again!

So, what to do?

All indicators include the text AdBlue, or Blue, which is a urea fluid used in the system. The first indicator includes the images of a downturned bottle of fluid. Another has the same words shown above a wavy line, meant to show the fluid’s level. In black and white, it indicates that the system is low on fluid and a message will likely be seen noting how many miles can be travelled. When in yellow/amber/orange, it also indicates that fluid is low and there are very few miles available. If it appears in Red, the system must have fluid added, or engine emissions will be excessive.

Another adds a wrench or spanner to the AdBlue text. In yellow/amber/orange, it indicates an issue with the system. In red, the system needs immediate attention or damage may be done to the engine and/or its emissions control systems. Only a qualified service shop or dealer will be capable of repairing the system.

Audi uses no less than 10 versions of the AdBlue symbol. The sets shown here forgo the text in the symbol because a text message will accompany the symbol. Why they insist on multiple colors is a true frustration, although if the symbol appears in red, their vehicles will not start until fluid is added.

The wrench added to the warning indicates that the wrong fluid has been added or a fault has been detected. The system must be purged or services by properly trained technicians. Again, color is not relevant, except again in red the problem is more serious and the vehicle cannot be started.
