Unlock a Jeep with a Dead Key Fob

How to Unlock Your Jeep Vehicle

Retrieving the mechanical key

A mechanical key will be needed first. To remove the emergency (mechanical) key from a key fob belonging to early Jeep vehicle, slide the mechanical latch at the top of the back of the Key Fob (remote control or ‘clicker’) to the side and then pull the mechanical key out with your free hand.

The Key Fobs used in models built after 2010 are sleeker and rounded (see the image to the left) but work the same way. Slide the mechanical latch at the top of the back of the Fob to the side and pull the emergency key out with your free hand.

And finally, the latest Wagoneer models, beginning in 2022, use the fob seen to the right. Look for a chrome button on the side, as denoted by the bottom arrow. Push it and pull on the key ring end, and the mechanical key is removed.

Getting inside

Most models

In nearly all Jeep models, a key hole is visible at the back of the driver’s door. Simply insert the mechanical key and turn and you’re in.

Wagoneer, 2022-2024

New (2022) Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models have their key holes hiding behind the driver’s door handle, as can be seen in the image to the right. It is exposed when the door handle is pulled to the open position. So, simply pull the door handle out as far as possible.

Insert the mechanical key (it may be awkward to get at) and turn it to unlock. Remove the key blade and release the handle. Pull the handle once again and you are in the car.

Wagoneer (2025) and Cherokee (2026)

A change is made in 2025 Wagoneer and 2026 Cherokee models. A door handle that is inset somewhat to the door panel is introduced, with a keyhole that needs work to be found. A small cover is seen on the right side of the grip area (right). Use the mechanical key to pry it off and reveal the keyhole.

Once again, insert the key and turn and you are inside.

Models examined include Cherokee, Compass, Patriot, Renegade, Wagoneer and Wrangler. Model years 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.
