Audi symbols

As we bull our way through a Audi symbols page update, we are struck by how many symbols are repeated in multiple colors.

In the update thus far we’ve added 14 new indicators, 11 of which are new to our database, posted four new systems, and have at least another 40 symbols to add! Coupled with the 138 currently on the page, the company is seems hell bent on not only reclaiming the crown of most indicators, but could very well top 200 before we’re finished.

But this is not the purpose of this post. The company is on a very troubling trend of using all the colors available for the same indicator. That is, their drivers not only need to know 100+ indicators, they need to become familiar what each color is trying to tell them.

Given this trend, it is highly likely that multiple indicators will be seen on an Audi instrument panel at all times!

For instance, we currently have 17 white and gray scale indicators on our page for the company. Plus we have another dozen or so to add.

What is striking however is that, while black and white and gray scale indicators are generally used in the industry to point out the status of a system, Audi is now using multiple versions for single systems.

For instance, we recently added a post for Audi‘s Maneuver Assist Indicators. As expected, there is a yellow/amber/orange version for a system fault, but also three additional black and white and gray scale indicators pointing to status! One of them features a line through, which sure could double as a fault indicator, but doesn’t. See the post here to understand the system.

In the meantime, we have 36 indicators that are seen in red and yellow/amber/orange, all of which seem completely unnecessary. Does anyone need more than a red loose wheel indicator? Surely not…

You can see the Audi symbols page here. And have a moment of silence for Audi drivers.
