Fuel tank system malfunction indicator

Tank system malfunction

This is a Fuel Tank System Malfunction Indicator symbol. It points to a malfunction in the fuel tank system. Note that the symbol looks very similar to the low fuel warning (please see below). Also, unfortunately, a proper diagnosis will likely require professional help.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Manufacturer Symbols pages and scan again!

There are a wide range of possible issues as the symbol is all encompassing and needlessly includes the word tank. Issues may range from components like the charcoal canister, purge valve, fuel pump, or fuel tank sensor. The first thing to check, and likely the only potential solution for a lay person, is to make sure the gas cap is properly tightened.

Other possible issues include the fuel pump or the fuel gauge and sensor. This last one is electrical, so a simple restart may reset the system.

Note: The symbol to the right is the low fuel indicator. The symbol is identical except that the lower two thirds is filled in with the color. Both also come through in the same color. Click here for more.
