While rounding up information on Volvo electric vehicle (EV) jump-start procedures, we’ve found the need to update the Volvo back-up open procedures.

Why? In effect, due to two of the very EVs we need to cover!

As of 2025, the EX30 and EX90 ditch the key fob in use since 2017 in favor of a rechargeable key tag (left). A key card and an app are available as well.

A new way to get in if the charge in the key tag is depleted will be needed. If this occurs, a key card or phone app is not available, a touch spot is provided that will allow the key tag to be recognized. On the EX30, it is half way up the driver’s door pilar.

With the EX90, the front of the driver’s door handle is proper spot. In both cases, hold the back of the key tag flat against the spot until the door unlocks.

This won’t work if the vehicle needs a jump start, but that is a topic for another day!
