From The Atlantic, “My Car is Becoming a Brick” certainly got my attention. It references the idea that software updates can leave older models in the dust. But I have to say, its the last thing on my mind as my car ages.
When I read the headline, I was concerned that it was going to be story about an electric vehicle (EV) that would no longer function. This was not the case.
The author is the driver of an older Tesla Model 3 and is concerned that Tesla no longer sends him new features. It feels like he’s become spoiled receiving over-the-air updates to fix bugs, tweak performance and to add new functionality.
Said another way, his vehicle continues to operate just fine within the confines of its original configuration. He makes the comparison to cell phones becoming obsolete due to software changes, but in point of fact, it’s the user that cannot live without new features.
If all you’re doing is making calls and texting, an old flip phone still does the trick. And the author’s EV is not remotely bricked, but its safe to say that he is!
