Fuels prices continue downward trend

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) monthly motor fuels prices for January 2026 show a continuation of a downward trend. In January, the average price for regular motor gasoline was $2.81 per gallon, down 2.9% from last month and 8.7% from January of 2025.

All regions experienced price drops, with the Rocky Mountain region seeing the largest relief with a 15.1% drop. Only the Gulf Coast region has lower gasoline prices with an average per gallon cost of $2.40 compared to $2.46 in the Rockies. Residents in the Gulf Coast saw a 10.3% drop at the pump.

Driving on the West Coast remains pricier than anywhere in the country with an average per gallon cost for gasoline of $3.68, although this is down 4.1%. Driving anywhere on the East Coast will cost $2.80 per gallon on average, down 7.9% on average.

Here are the regional breakdowns:

  • West Coast: $3.68 (down 4.1%)
  • Central Atlantic: $2.90 (down 8.2%)
  • New England: $2.81 (down 6.0%)
  • Lower Atlantic: $2.68 (down 9.6%)
  • Midwest: $2.63 (down 10.5%)
  • Rocky Mountain: $2.46 (down 15.1%)
  • Gulf Coast: $2.40 (down 10.3%)

As to diesel no. 2, the average price was $3.52 in January, down 2.5% from December, and 3.1% from the same month last year.
