Some 463,000 Hyundai, Kia vehicles must park outside due to fire risk

This past week, three recall notices from Hyundai and Kia called for 462,883 Telluride, Ioniq 5, EV6 and EV9 vehicles to park outside due to potential fire risks.

The vast majority — 462,869 — touch 2020 through 2024 Kia Telluride models. In these vehicles, the front power seat motor may overheat due to a stuck power seat slide knob or an improper repair of a previous recall, number 24V407. The current recall number is SC374, replacing the original recall.

In the other, six 2023-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and eight 2022-2024 Kia EV6 and 2024 EV9 EVs also face a park outside admonition for identical battery issues. The high voltage battery cells may contain misaligned electrodes, which can lead to a fire while parked or driving.

In the Tellurides, dealers will install an electronic fuse assembly at no charge.

Owners of the EVs are advised to charge to a maximum of 80% as well parking outside until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery system assembly, free of charge.

Owners of all the vehicles may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. They may also search their vehicle identification numbers at the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, nhtsa.gov to verify their recall status. EV model status is available now, but Telluride models will not be searchable at NHTSA for this recall until July 17.
