Where does Cybercab fit in the marketplace?

Cybercab.

Something’s been bothering me about Tesla’s Cybercab since its introduction. Who are the customers? What would an individual do with a cab? Is it for cab companies?

A few days ago, Elon Musk answered the question. The car’s for Tesla itself!

Among the news garnered from the company’s third-quarter earnings call as reported by InsideEVs, deliveries are set to begin at the end of 2-26. But Musk says customers will more or less be beta testers, and the majority of Cybercabs will be owned and operated by Tesla.

Would anyone buy a car actually named “cab”?

Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy was quoted as saying “Obviously we’re producing them on the line in Texas, but all of those are currently going into our own internal robotaxi fleet.”

Musk himself said on the call “The vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be essentially Tesla-owned and transport as a service.”

Perhaps we’ll see Tesla sales service centers transformed into transport hubs with Cybercabs coming and going. Barring some sort of wireless charging options, the cars will to be attended to and might even need a service every now and again.

Tesla has already dropped the Model S and Model X — will the other models follow?

Time will tell if the company is actually going to stay in the vehicle market at all and simply become a transportation service company.
