In August we noted that an attempt to update our Jaguar pages left us scratching our heads, showing a Type 00 prototype and awaiting a new Type 01. All previous models, save the F Type, were discontinued.
Well, the company has now shown the Type 01, pointing to an all electric future — and why the F-Type is still available — and a look that is nothing like anything Jaguar has ever produced.
Its big, fast (0-60mph in 3.1 sec.), powerful (over 1,000 maximum HP) with 400 miles of range. It is thus far only available in Europe.
A couple of unusual details describe how, while other manufacturers continue with the SUV trend, the Type 01 remains lower to the ground. “Underfloor batteries traditionally raise a roofline.?? To save precious millimeters of height, connectors for the 200 battery cells are positioned on the sides of the individual cells, rather than on top.”
And something called the Tri Apex Node, whatever that is, allows the battery to reach further forward.?
A point to take issue with is an intelligent deployable rear spoiler. “The three-stage design is hidden at low speeds, but reduces drag and generates up to 165 lbs of downforce at 96mph. This improves traction and stability, enabling higher cornering speeds and more effective braking and acceleration.”
This could easily reduce range radically.
Then there’s the hot stone massage on the front row seats. Hopefully this won’t cause the driver to fall asleep.
It is “clearly” seen to be partially obscured — even more so for shorter drivers! The shot is taken from a pretty high angle.
And, of course, a center control panel that is all touch screen and n knobs or dials. Exactly the opposite of the latest trends, which lean towards returning some traditional controls for HVAC and entertainment systems.
Time will tell, and we’ll ultimately have to get a look ourselves. It just doesn’t feel like a major winner for Jaguar.
