Green Car Journal hands out 2027 Green Car of the Year awards

Green cars.

The Green Car Journal has handed out it 2027 Green Car of the Year awards — nine of them to be exact. It came to our attention through Karma, as its Gyesera Grand Coupe was awarded Luxury Green Car of the Year. And while it sure looks the part (below right), what really catches the eye is the vehicle’s starting price — $139,950!

The electric vehicle (EV) industry has long had a love affair with pricey top-of-the-line products that only the wealthy can afford. The industry then wonders why sales are slow, even with liquid fuel prices as high as they are.

To the publication’s credit, their actual Green Car of the Year — the Kia EV3 — comes in at a far more palatable $29,890 and sports a driving range that varies from 221 to 321 miles depending on configuration. And the Neighborhood Green Car of the Year — the Fiat Topolino (below right) — starts at $13,995. But it will only go 47 miles — at 25 mph no less!

Nevertheless, the preponderance of EVs available to the driving public are in the $40,000, $50,000 and $60,000 range. Where are the practical Toyota Corolla equivalent and their competitors on the EV side? It sure isn’t the Topolino, a car that will take nearly an hour to cover its 47 mile range! And its a stand-alone.

Modestly priced EVs with a reasonable set of features and decent range simply do not exist nor do manufacturers show any inclination to move in that direction. For the most part — for at least in the U.S. market — the chase for high-end, high-dollar models mirrors the trend to large SUVs and pick up trucks seen in the internal combustion engine side of the market.

Perhaps if the EV3 sees some success competitors will come to play. However, the success of Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 has not produced many competitors, which would serve to push Hyundai‘s prices.
