New Rivian safety video that will save a life in a power failure

We’ve added an important safety video to YouTube which shows how to get out of the back seats of a Rivian R1S or R1T if the power is lost. See it below — not easy to say the least.

The first thing to add is that if there are young children in the back seat, have them crawl to the front to escape. They will not likely have the strength to pull the trim away and each from door has an easily accessed release at the front of the arm rest.

The owner of the vehicle and myself spent nearly six minutes working on the trim piece, not wanting to do damage. This is not an issue in an emergency, but it doesn’t make the job any easier. And ease is what is needed here.

Too many manufacturers of vehicles with electronic locks and latches treat the mechanical back-ups as an afterthought, is this is one of the worst. This image shows the heavy duty trim clips that need to come loose. Velcro comes to mind.

Even if the piece could be easily removed, the wire loop was difficult to find with the door open! With the door closed and in an emergency? The company should be embarrassed in the least.

The owner and myself are working on a modification that Rivian owners can add to make escape far simpler. We’ll add a link when its ready.
