BTS releases its Transborder Freight Data Annual Report for 2025

Transborder freight

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) has compiled and released Transborder freight data for 2025. Their annual reports include the dollar value of commodities that moved across the U.S. land borders with Canada and Mexico and does so by mode of transportation, as required by the Office of Management and Budget.

It should come as no surprise that manufacturing and logistics sectors are linked and interdependent across a;; of North America. The land borders with Canada and Mexico are vital economic conduits for North American supply chains, with about $4.0 billion in daily cross-border freight shipments.

In addition to oil and energy products, automobiles, and electronics, Canada and Mexico are also America’s largest trading partners in agricultural goods. The land borders with Canada and Mexico consistently facilitate over $1 trillion in cross-border trade every year.

By comparison, in 2025 the value of total U.S.-international trade was $5.3 trillion, of which U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico comprised nearly one-third.

In 2025, U.S. freight flows with Canada and Mexico decreased 1% from 2024 to $1.6 trillion. Freight between the U.S. and Canada was dropped 6.4% to $712.8 billion in 2025, while freight between the U.S. and Mexico was $872.8 billion in 2025, rose 3.9% from 2024.

Trucking remains the surface transportation leader, carrying 55.7% of trade with Canada and 73.6% with Mexico. Surface transportation includes truck, rail and pipeline and facilitates over 80% of all freight by value.

Rail remains vital across both borders, but Canada’s modal profile is uniquely bolstered by pipeline shipments. In 2025, mineral fuels moved via pipeline ranked as the second-largest mode for U.S.-Canada trade at 13.4%, outpacing rail’s 12.6% share. Meanwhile, rail accounted for a consistent 10.9% of freight value with Mexico.

All data in this report is sourced from BTS Transborder Freight Data. These sources include Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Border Crossing/Entry Data and TransBorder Freight Data, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Trade Statistics and Port Wait Times.
