Grade Assist and Hill Descent Control Indicators

Grade Assist

These are Grade Assist Indicator symbols. Grade assist automatically applies a continuous balance of braking and throttle adjustments to avoid slipping or getting stuck on difficult or slick terrain. Thus the speedometer is shown in some images.

There are multiple versions only because manufacturers present a symbol that feature the profile of their models. The third one above for instance, is from Mini., which adds a set speed, chosen by the driver. BMW uses the same system and thus uses a similar indicator featuring a more rounded vehicle image.

Hill Descent Control

Generally, these versions will also show a vehicle on a down slope, a common use for the system. In fact, some manufacturers refer to the system as Hill Descent Control. The choice of color is left to the manufacturer, so a yellow/amber/orange indicator, like those seen below, is not necessarily due to a malfunction, but it may be. You will need to refer to your owner’s manual.

However, black and white indicators are becoming very, very common, in which case, they are commonly accompanied by a text message. The systems are either on standby and available to use or unavailable. The text message provide the  necessary information.

The last image with the letters DSR is a Downhill Speed Regulation indicator. A fancier title for the same system.

BMW and Mini use a gray-scale image like the one to the left. The version used by BMW feature a more rounded vehicle. The color gray indicates that the system is on standby or is temporarily off line. A set speed, chosen by the driver, is shown and can vary between 2 mph and 20 mph.

Fault indicators

These versions indicates a problem with the Grade Assist system or the system has been turned off. And they are seen in the color more commonly used to denote a malfunction, yellow/amber/orange. If it is seen, your dealer or a qualified service shop will be needed.
