For a decade, Kia has used the simplest emergency start processes ever created — touch the key fob to the start/stop button for fob recognition.
Now, with the latest Telluride — 2027 — and EV9 — since its introduction in 2024 — the company has opted on two spots on the center console.
An emergency start process is needed in the instance of a weak or discharged key fob battery or signal interference
The Telluride will use a spot to the left of the cup holders (right).
The EV9 uses a spot to the left of the wireless charging spot just in front of the center console storage area (below right).
Both spots are marked by a drawing of a key fob. Drop the fob on the drawing and start either vehicle as normal. The key fob will be recognized.
Why the company abandoned the simple tough the button process is simply unknown. It is also unknown if this style of emergency starting will spread to other models over time.
