As reported by InsideEVs, Musk spoke at the most recent quarterly earnings call and claimed the company is making some great progress on its vision-based Full Self-Driving software.
However, this will require at least a Level 4 autonomous driving system, and the company’s Autopilot system remains at Level 2. Will that progress take it up two levels?
Further, the company and its CEO have without fail overpromised and underdelivered. For instance, the Cybertruck was to begin production in late 2021 but it did not begin until November of 2023. And both the Model X and Model 3 faced huge release setbacks on the way to actual production.
Regardless, whenever Cybercabs begin rolling off the assembly line, to our minds several questions remain. For instance, could the vehicles operate anywhere — which one might expect — or will they roll out in restricted, trial areas?
And who is Tesla targeting as a customer base for the vehicle? The addition of CAB in the name suggests a business application, but it’s more likely that the company expects individuals to purchase a CAB.
Are we all willing to give up control? I have a relative who is but I’m not, and I’m sure I’m not alone.
The whole thing doesn’t “feel” right. The name is wrong, and the concept lacks soul.
It’s a bit early to call the Cybertruck a failure, as a whole lot of them went out the door early. But there are sure a lot of them stuck on company lots and few vehicles have ever been so polarizing, irrespective of the company CEO.
The Cybercab feels like its headed in the same direction, even if Autopilot lives up to its hype.
