We’ve completed a full review of Genesis back-up start and open processes, and while there are no definitive changes across the line, we did find that we had to make a few adjustments to the start page.
For the record, back-up open and start processes are necessary for moments when the battery in the key fob dies or when there is interference from other electronic devices.
First, we’ll note that while a mechanical key is made available to Genesis owners, it is provided separately now for all models. From our perspective, this is a prescription for losing the mechanical key. It has a hole in it for use of a key chain and we highly, highly recommend carrying it with the fob on the same key chain.
What we needed to adjust was the use of a separate back-up start spot introduced in the 2021 G80. It was used only in that model for two years and was then abandoned in favor of the original “push the button with the key fob” approach used across the line before and since.
The “new” method did not, as we speculated, spread to other models. The G80 in 2021 and 2022 used a spot in front of the center console armrest to place the key fob for recognition by the car (left).
All back-up entry processes remain as in previous model years.
