A complete Dodge tech review for 2026 finds no changes to the back-up open and start processes for the model year.
Of course, there are only three models as the Hornet has at least been paused and faces discontinuation due to a 25% U.S. tariff on the Italian-built model. The company also notes that sales were already low for previous year models.
In any case, the two Charger electric vehicle (EV) models remain as the only models that do not display a key hole for mechanical key use. And older Hornet models are the only outlier on the back-up start process.
Back-up open and start processes are made necessary in keyless start vehicles for those moments when the battery in the key fob dies or electrical interference causes the fob to be unrecognized by the vehicle.
The Charger uses recessed door handles with a small, removable cap beneath and to the rear of the recess on the driver’s door. The cap is easily removed with a finger pulling from behind (right) exposing the key hole.
Hornet models use one of the cup holders as a back-up start recognition location. The key fob is simply dropped into the spot shown in the image to the left.
