Continued cold fails to harm Niro EV range

The east coast of the U.S. continues to suffer from an extended cold snap the likes of which has not been seen in decades. Despite this, the Kia Niro EV range has held.

Sure, it is less than what it experienced a year ago, but temperatures since mid-January and early have exceeded the freezing mark only twice, and bottomed out last night at 4°F.

In fact, high temperatures for the first week of February have averaged some 15°F cooler than the same week a year ago!

Niro range in FebruaryIn that time, the electric vehicle has been recharged twice, the first time to 218 miles, and yesterday to 216 miles, numbers that are within what might be called a margin of error.

This compares favorably with our last check, posted here.

Again a year ago, during a far milder winter, the Niro EV never dropped below 235 miles.

The car’s expected EPA range is 250 miles, and the car reached 325 miles during the warmest months of the summer.

The cold is expected to break, at last, in the coming week. I’m keeping a more watchful eye on this data in the hopes that it can fully recover the rather pleasantly surprising summertime range.

That is, has the excessive cold caused any permanent harm to the lithium-ion polymer battery.

Time — and temperature — will tell.
