Master Dashboard Warning Light and Attention Indicators

Master Light

Master Warning Light SymbolThese are both Master Dashboard Warning Light and Attention symbols, in red. If this light is on, there will likely be text displayed as well on the instrument panel, or another warning light. Look for text in particular. It could very well point out something as serious as low oil pressure. However, despite the serious look to the symbol, it is generally associated with simple reminders such as a door ajar or that it is time to change the oil.

  • First, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below!
  • Otherwise return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

So, what’s up with the next one??

Amber Master Warning Light SymbolThis same symbol, an exclamation point in a triangle, in yellow/amber has been used by European and Asian vehicle manufacturers in two ways. First, it indicates a fault in the vehicle’s Stability Control System, as well as a slip indicator. Click here for more. The vehicle can be driven with caution, but without the benefit of the advanced electronic control system.

Second, it is used in many cases to indicate that a text warning is available in the vehicle’s Information Display. It may involve a malfunction in any system. A Check Control message will likely require changing screens to discover the root problem.

Related Symbols

Attention indicatorAttention indicatorAnd then there are these, which feature a lower case letter “i” in a square. It too is meant to alert the driver to look for a message in the information center, but the message will not involve a serious drivability issue. The manufacturer uses the red triangles for this. It may be seen in yellow/amber or black and white.

If you’re seeing red, see your dealer or authorized service center as soon as possible.

Hybrid System Operation Dashboard Indicators

Hybrid System

eDrive preparation symbolDownhill ready indicatorThese symbols are Hybrid System Operation Indicators symbols. They will be seen in some hybrid vehicles when the navigation system is engaged in destination guidance. Hybrid operation is adapting  to specific route sections.

  • Before moving on, is one of these truly your symbol??
  • If not, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The first, a checkered flag, indicates that electric driving is being prepared for a specific area about to be encountered. The second, a downhill grade and percent sign in a triangle, indicates that the system is ready to charge the battery while moving downhill.

The symbols will be seen in the energy flow display, and again indicates that a particular driving situation has been detected ahead and the hybrid system is preparing for it. Use of the hybrid system is optional.

Hybrid Vehicle Operation Mode Dashboard Indicators

EV Mode Indicators

EV mode indicatorHybrid mode standbyThis and the images that follow below are Hybrid EV Mode Indicator symbols. They are related to the operational state of a hybrid vehicle. The first two indicate that the EV Mode is switched on and operating when in green, but is unavailable when shown in gray scale. Availability depends on factors such as the state of the battery’s charge, outside temperature, vehicle speed, etc., depending on manufacturer.

  • Before moving on, is one of these truly your symbol??
  • If not, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

EV mode unavailable indicatorThe same basic image as above with a line drawn through it indicates that EV mode is not available, again because the proper conditions are not met. It may also mean that a destination may have been chosen in navigation that exceeds the hybrid battery range.

eDrive indicatorThe text only symbol, eDRIVE, is found in hybrid systems that switch between using the internal combustion engine, the high voltage battery, or a combination of both automatically when conditions warrant. It will be displayed when the vehicle is under battery power alone.

eBoost indicatorThis text only symbol, eBoost, will be displayed when a hybrid vehicle is under extreme acceleration, such as in passing situations. It indicates that the high voltage battery is in full use to support or Boost the acceleration.

Combustion engine operation indicatorThis symbol, also in black and white features a drawing of an internal combustion (IC) engine with an embedded circular arrow. It indicates that the hybrid vehicle is operating on the IC engine alone.

Battery hold indicatorThis image indicates that use of the high voltage battery is on hold. The vehicle will operate using the IC engine predominantly in order to maintain the charge level in the high voltage battery. It too is in black and white.

Automatic hybrid operationAutomatic hybrid operation indicatorThese two are related as they both indicate that hybrid operation is in automatic mode. The second adds a slightly misshapen triangle underneath which indicates that the navigation system is active and that navigation data is being taken into consideration.

Auto charge modeCharge modeEV modeThis set of indicators come from Honda Motors Corp. found in their Hybrid vehicles: Auto Mode, Charge Mode, and EV mode. In Auto Mode, the vehicle selects which propulsion source is most appropriate, the electric motor, the gasoline engine, or a combination of the two and automatically switches to it. In Charge Mode, the engine starts and the High Voltage battery charges. In EV mode, the vehicle is propelled exclusively by the electric motor, so long as the battery has sufficient charge. And to the extent of battery charge, these modes can be chosen at will by the driver.

Battery assist 1Battery assist 2Battery assist 3These final three images are associated with what is termed a Mild Hybrid System, which uses a smaller, 48-volt battery to assist the driveline. The first image is displayed when the battery is supplying power. The second indicates that the battery is supporting high acceleration. The third image indicates that power from the mild hybrid system is unavailable.

The images are truly meaningless without explanatory text. A knobby outside circle with another circle inside? And what do the two lines top right and the three bent ones lower left mean? The last one is essentially a cross out and is the only one of any use — if you already know the meaning of the first two!

Frost or Freeze Warning or Snow Mode Indicator Symbols

Frost or Snow Mode

Frost Warning IndicatorSnow and ice modeSlippery conditions indicatorWeather mode indicatorThese symbols are used in two ways. Most commonly it is a Frost or Freeze Warning Indicator symbol. Also, particularly those in the colors interpreted as yellow, amber or orange likely indicate that the vehicle has been placed in Snow Mode (below). As a Frost or Freeze warning indicator, the snowflake or ice crystal symbol will come on in yellow/amber when the outside temperature drops to within a few degrees of freezing (about 40°F). At freezing or below, the symbol may turn red.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

More Versions

Note that in some electric vehicles (EVs), the same symbol or a similar one in blue or is used as a warning that some charge in the main EV battery may be lost or unavailable due to cold weather. The owner’s manual will offer methods for warming the battery.

Frost warningThe version on the far left, which includes lane markers, is used exclusively to indicate cold weather and the possibility of frost on the roadway. The same is true of the second version, where the snowflake or ice crystal image is shown in a triangle.

If the the outside temperature is warmer that 40°F, it is most likely that Snow Mode, and if its a surprise, it may have been chosen accidentally.

It is activated in a number of ways. There may be a button on the console near the shift lever with the snow flake symbol on it. There may be a number of modes available through a menu activated by a button on the steering wheel or one of the stalks attached to the steering column. In these instances, the instrument panel light indicates that the Snow Mode has been activated (see the link). In this mode, the vehicle will start moving in 2nd or even 3rd gear depending on how slippery it is beneath the drive wheels.

Lambda Sensor Warning Indicator Symbol

Lambda Sensor

Lambda Sensor IndicatorThis is the Lambda Sensor Warning Indicator symbol. The symbol says that the exhaust gas oxygen sensor is dirty or inoperative. The vehicle should not be driven for any length of time in this condition as this sensor is key to controlling the oxygen to fuel ratio in your engine. The Greek letter lambda looks like an upside down Y and it is shown in a triangle.

  • Before continuing, are you sure this is your symbol?? If yes, then read on below.
  • Otherwise you can return to our main Picture Symbols page and scan again!

The symbol is an odd mix of green and yellow/amber colors, not to mention a letter from the Greek alphabet, and is seen only in older vehicles. Yellow/amber is a warning color while green is intended to inform and not to warn. The Check Engine Light is used to covers this fault in later models.

Tow or Haul Mode and Fault Indicators

Tow Mode

Tow Mode IndicatorHaul (towing) IndicatorHaul indicatorTow mode indicatorTrailer mode active indicatorTowing modeThese are Tow or Haul Mode and Fault Indicator symbols. If your vehicle is equipped with Tow Mode, one of these lights will be lit when the mode is selected. The symbol may be in text, using the word TOW and or HAUL, or as an image of one of several forms of a trailer. In green or blue, the indicators mean that Tow Mode is active.

Many More Versions

Tow or haul mode indicatorIn more advanced models, the second image above with the trailer is used to indicate that a Trailer Merge Assist system has been activated. It is tied directly to the vehicle’s blind spot monitoring system. Click the link for more.

Trailer connected indicatorTrailer connected indicatorTrailer connection indicatorThe image with arrows above the trailer is no more than a Trailer Connected indicator. It illuminates when a trailer is connected and will go out when it is disconnected. The same is true of the image of the trailer hitch ball and the trailer, both shown in green.  The color makes more sense too. There’s little need for a warning color when simply noting something normal. The final image looks like a 19th century covered wagon.

If any of these illuminate unexpectedly, the system has likely been switched on accidently. Find the proper switch to turn it off, or, lacking a switch, check with a service center.

Trailer Fault WarningTrailer brake disconnectedTrailer fault indicatorThese versions however, are trailering fault warnings. The exclamation point in the triangle above the trailer in the first image is the give away. If illuminated, check all electrical connections as well as the physical trailer connection(s). Otherwise, the issue may involve the main vehicle’s suspension or stability control systems and a qualified service shop will be needed.

The second has the line through what is the trailer image again set inside the circle and brackets. The latter is the standard image depicting brakes. It indicates that the trailer’s brakes are in fact disconnected. It is likely an electronic system and thus a wiring issue.

The third is simply seen in white. Make the same checks as above.

Sway control indicatorSome vehicles offer Sway Control for use while towing, a system that works in in conjunction with the Stability Control System. And like that system, the Sway Control Indicator will flash when sway is detected and being corrected.
