New video on our YouTube channel: Open, Start a Cadillac Lyriq EV with a dead key fob battery

Open, start a Cadillac Lyriq

We got our hands on a new EV (electric vehicle) and had the opportunity to demonstrate how to open, start a Cadillac Lyriq with a non-functioning key fob.

The Lyriq does not have a key hole in or on the driver’s door, but the car does make use of a mechanical key. A key hole is found under the lip of the liftgate (below right). When the gate is unlocked, it rises slightly and the door handles extend for use to open the doors. Those handles normally extend when a key fob is brought to the car.

Starting the car makes use of the rear cup holder. The owner’s manual states that the buttons should face down, but it started for us just fine with the buttons facing up.

The key fob battery is larger than what has been the defacto standard for many years, the CR 2032. The CR 2650 used by Cadillac is likely to last 50% longer, and thus even more likely to surprise a driver!

Smart Keys or Intelligent Keys, or Access Keys – or whatever the manufacturer of your chooses to call them – that let you into your car and start it with just a touch use up their internal batteries at alarming rates, catching busy drivers unawares – even though the car had tried to warn you.

Our goal is to help you feel safe – and keep you moving or get you moving if at all possible – rather than leave you fretting whenever your key fob stops working. The instructions for getting into and starting most keyless start cars can be found on our pages – without roadside assistance.

You can see the new video on our YouTube channel here, or on our Cadillac page, which now has 15 videos, here.
