2025 New York International Auto Show reflections

Auto Show reflections

As has been the case since COVID, the auto show reflections revolve around who didn’t show. Notably, Mercedes made its return for the first time. Stellantis was there in full force as well, including space for a Wagoneer, which a company representative noted is back under the Jeep moniker. They tried to set it off as a separate luxury brand, but “it didn’t stick.”

Missing include Audi, BMW, Cadillac, GMC, Nissan and Infiniti, Jaguar and Land Rover, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Polestar. And given the show hosts only a single floor of new models, there are likely some that I missed. Volvo showed only two models in a very small space.

The show is in its 125th year, and its just not what it used to be. We’ve not seen any indication of late cancelations due to the recent tariff upsets, but its hard to imagine a scenario where this did not have an impact.

In the meantime, an EV test track remains at the lower level and Hyundai again took advantage of extra space and put its own test track alongside its new models.

We took note of a new screen used as an instrument panel in a Ford Mustang convertible (left). The new Dodge Charger EV (right), which still manages to hold court as it did in the 1970s.

We spotted a new Toyota Land Cruiser ROX (Recreation Open eXperience) that is clearly looking to compete with the Ford Bronco and half of Jeep’s lineup. The angle doesn’t show it, but it sports a canvas roof.

We got a chance to get at the key hole in the Acura ZDX, which is the same as the Honda Prologue and we found it on a Chevrolet Traverse. Remember, the ZDX and Prologue are General Motors platforms! We’ll put a video or two together soon for our YouTube page.

However, all in all the show is a disappointment. It used to be we wished we had more time to get through everything. This round, we were done in less than two hours.

Technology is always changing and what is current and accurate today may be literally out-of-date and inaccurate tomorrow. And when it comes to the current state of flux in the auto industry, nothing is more true.
