The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) have released monthly motor fuels prices for May of this year, and the numbers remain discouraging.
Amid ongoing supply issues, the average price for regular gasoline was up another 9.2% from April this year and a shocking 42.2% from May of 2025.
The New England region again saw the largest increase in the average price for regular gasoline year-over-year change with a 49.6% jump to $4.45. The Midwest rose 45.7% to $4.39/gallon while the Gulf Coast and Central Atlantic regions both rose 44.5% to $3.95/ and $4.49/gallon, respectively.
The West Coast region rose “only” 32.2%, but finished May at well over $5/gallon, $5.59.
And there doesn’t appear to be any relief.
The average price for diesel no. 2 was $5.60 in May 2026, up only 1.8% from April of this year, abut up a whopping 60.0% from May of last year.
As noted, with no sign of relief in sight, the news will only likely be worse in next month’s report.
There is much more to be seen at the BTS website here.
