A possible tempered glass safety risk we all need to know about

I happened on a video out of Idaho that pointed out a potentially serious safety risk to drivers.

The tempered glass used in side windows is easily shattered so that an occupant can easily escape. The glass in a windshield has an added layer of plastic between two layers of glass so that it doesn’t shatter. This is also done primarily for other safety reasons.

A further benefit of tempered glass is that it breaks into small, blunt pieces that less likely to cause cuts.

Now, there exists a trend to add that same three-layer arrangement to the front side windows in order to reduce road noise. This makes the videos we’ve all seen of occupant breaking the door glass from the inside in order to escape the vehicle in an emergency obsolete.

And rescuers need to use a saw to break through from the outside. The lamination can be seen looking down at the top of the window when it’s rolled down.

Again, this seems this to apply only to front side windows. Climbing into the back seat to break a window there could just save your life.
