Charge warning

What has been a traditional low charge waring indicator now has a dual purpose. BMW and Mini are using the yellow/amber/orange version to indicate that the charging station charging power may be restricted or not available. Specifically, a Charging Capacity Limited indicator.

The Low Battery Charge Warning indicator is seen when the available power in an electric vehicle’s (EV’s) high voltage battery runs low, as you might have guessed. The image is meant to invoke the low fuel warning light in gasoline powered vehicles. Since we live in a world used to gasoline pumps, the indicator image is the familiar pump but with an electric plug at the end of the hose.

For the record, if you see this symbol in red, stop and get some juice ASAP!

In the new case, an issue with the charging function is indicated, which of course means that the vehicle is plugged in to a charge station and has encountered a problem.

In truth, Maserati also uses a black and white version of the symbol to indicate which side of vehicle the charge port is located. The left side, according to the arrow in the image shown. Many gas and diesel fueled vehicles use an arrow alongside a fuel pump image as well for the fill location.

The black and white version says nothing about the state of charge.

The page, which can be seen here, has been updated to accommodate this.
