DashboardSymbols.com is built on Wordpress platform and I wanted to share a serious incident that occurred a few weeks ago.
For reasons I came to understand only at the incident’s end, the site became pretty much impossible to navigate, from the outside as a user and from the inside as the webmaster. The site’s host was of little help.
The incident was over in 24 hours — 24 hours of struggle and tests and back and forths with the host. What had happened was a plug-in — the broken links checker — automatically updated and began over taxing the server. I had managed to get in and slowly — because of the problem — shut down each plug-in one at a time. I hit the right one minutes before it was updated again, which was the final resolution to the problem.
The lesson is this: I am notified of updates when they occur, which is rather regularly. I now immediately test the site when a new update is announced. Had I done so when the update of the broken links checker was announced, it would have saved a lot of grief.
Checking immediately is the easiest way to avoid prolonged down time, which could be costly for some sites.
If you are more paranoid, you might consider turning off auto updates and handling them all manually. However, in 16 years, it is the only incident of its kind.

Technology is always changing and what is current and accurate today may be literally out-of-date and inaccurate tomorrow. And when it comes to the current state of flux in the auto industry, nothing is more true.
