EV charging.

Just before Memorial Day, we noted that a new player in the Level 3 electric vehicle (EV) charging space was offering a very inexpensive charging opportunity for the holiday weekend.

That special was $0.20 kWh, easily beating home charging in my state.

At the time, we stated that this would put the pressure on other suppliers to reduce their prices. Sure enough, soon after Electrify America reduced its prices, off-peak, by nearly one third.

Now InsideEVs reports that Walmart is making a big push to add charging stations to its roughly 5,000 stores nationwide. Pricing wasn’t stated, but customers enrolled in Walmart+ get a 10% discount off a number that is likely already very competitive.

The company currently has Electrify America stations and its CCS plugs at 300 of its stores, but the build out would use third party chargers with both CCS and NACS options. And customers get to use the charge time spending money in the stores!

To be sure, automaker-backed IONNA has far bigger plans with some 30,000 fast chargers in the works and there are others in the mix as well. We’ll let InsideEVs fill you in here.

I have yet to pull the trigger on a home charger, but perhaps the inconvenience won’t feel like one if the price is right.

And lets face it, there’s a player missing. With Walmart in the mix, how long will it be before Amazon gets in on the fun??

I’m old enough to remember gas price wars of the late sixties and early seventies. This could be fun!
