Nissan adds a new back-up open process

Back-up open

A full review of 2025 and 2026 Nissan models finds a single back-up open process. A new door handle is found on the 2026 Leaf.

The review included back-up start processes. All 2025 and 2026 models use exactly the same process, which is to touch the back of the key fob to the start/stop button (left) to start the vehicle.

Backup entry and start processes are necessary for those moments when the battery in the key fob dies or the fob encounters electrical interference.

The new Leaf door handle is the same as that found in the 2025 and 2026 Infiniti QX80. The handle is flush to the vehicle body and effectively hides the key hole. To get to the key hole, press the front of the door handle inward. This rotates the rear of the handle outward (right).

The handle can then be pulled open. Do so as far as it will go exposing the key hole beneath the back of the handle. You can now use the mechanical key to unlock the car.

To Nissan‘s credit no other models hide the key hole at all, a feature we find to be a safety concern for so many drivers of so many cars.
