A Niro re-charge at 45° F recovered only a small amount of range

Niro re-charge

After an ice cold trip in the Northeast over New Years, we noted that we would do a Niro re-charge at about 45° F. We did, but did not see the recovery we hoped for.

A year after not seeing the electric vehicle’s (EV’s) range drop below 235 miles, the holiday trip at temperatures that dipped to as low as 12°F took the range down to 200 miles. Our recharge at 46° F recovered only 7% of the car’s range, topping out at 214 miles (below right).

Of course, the concern here is that the super cold weather has left a permanent mark on the car’s battery. We will continue to monitor the batter’s condition over time and report back.

Our previous EV, the Polestar 2, also suffered during a cold winter excursion, but returned to it’s expected 250 mile range. But that vehicle never showed extra range in warm weather.

The Niro exceeds all expectations in the summertime — or at least it did. We certainly hope that it will return to that extraordinary summertime performance.

We’re still on the case…
