Latest Niro re-charge produces only a small range gain

Range gain

A week of generally warmer weather and a re-charge added only a modest amount of range gain in the Kia Niro. A new recharge saw range rise to only 218 miles, vs the 214 miles we saw about 10 days ago.

That number is extrapolated from the 95% charge and resulting 207 miles range the electric vehicle (EV) actually received.

Again, the northeast saw a very average winter in 2025, with few very cold days. And while we are in the midst of seeing a steep drop in temperatures yet again, the past 10 days have been withing last year’s averages.

The point is that, the Niro never dropped below about 235 miles in range on a re-charge. It is true that we were not following the numbers anywhere near as closely as we are now, but we are quite confident in our interpretation.

The primary concern remains the question of whether or not exposure to more extreme cold can do lasting damage to the battery in the Niro EV. Its chemistry is not a match for more mainstream EVs.

We will continue to watch closely.
