Tailgate and liftgate malfunction indicators

Tailgate and liftgate malfunction

These are Tailgate and Liftgate Malfunction Indicator symbols. One or these will be seen when the tailgate or liftgate or both does/do not close properly. They are presented in red as what might be mistaken as tailgate or liftgate ajar indicators with an exclamation point added. The exclamation points are ridiculously small and may be missed by the driver.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Manufacturer Symbols pages and scan again!

These are electronic systems exclusive to Rivian. The first symbol is a liftgate malfunction indicator, which would only be seen on the R1S. The second is both a tailgate and a liftgate malfunction indicator, which as shown would also only be seen on the R1S. However, the third image with only the tailgate down, would be seen on the R1T.

Both these features open and close electronically. Each has mechanical back up options if the systems fails, which calls into question the need for the electronic versions at all.
