I had an interesting conversation with a friend recently. She thought she had a frozen key fob. The fob stopped working without warning and she realized the fob had been sitting on the floor of the vehicle’s center console, which was really, really cold.
So, she rubbed the fob in her hands and against her leg for a few minutes, and the fob came back to life.
I had to test this to pass along whatever information I could glean. So I placed my spare key fob in the freezer overnight. The next day, I walked towards the car with the frozen fob. The mirrors came out to meet me as usual.
I put together a short video you can see here or below.
So, the conclusion is two fold. First, cold is not likely to impact the operation of a key fob. And second, her fob is likely in need of a battery replacement.
The battery in my spare fob is four years old. I’ll check in with my friend to see if her fob is still working or if she’s replaced the battery.
