As they do each year, Consumer Reports has released its list auto manufacturer new vehicle rankings, with Subaru remaining at the top, followed closely by BMW. The latter then ranks first among luxury brands.
The group rated cars from 31 brands on reliability, owner satisfaction, safety, and road-test scores.
Their list ranks car manufacturers from best to worst. To assess new vehicle quality, Consumer Reports calculated the averages of new vehicles’ overall score, which is a combination of the four factors noted above.
Japanese brands tend to clump near the top, as they have for years.
Several companies made big gains in the latest survey. Lincoln moved up 17 positions, which the group attributes to its aging product line. Newer products tend to feature more issues initially.
Tesla rose eight spots, for essentially the same reason. The recent loss of the Model S and Model X could see the company’s standing rise in coming years. The Model X, in particular, was a difficult vehicle to produce and maintain.
In the meantime, Audi dropped 10 spots as their new electric vehicles (EVs) have had reliability issues.
Chrysler, which has never scored very well in these rankings, dropped to number 25, despite producing a single vehicle. Sister company Jeep, whose vehicles remain very popular with the buying public, comes in dead last in Consumer Reports‘ reliability ratings.
The list can be seen and examined here. Its a great place to start if you’re in the market for a new vehicle.
