How to Start a Hyundai with a Dead Key Fob

Hyundai uses a number of different ways to start the vehicle if the Smart Key battery is weak or the Smart Key does not work correctly. For a time, the company are migrated all their models to the first method below, but have backtracked a bit in 2026.

If your start battery is still good, we’re going to get you going! Just follow along.

2013 and newer models

The latest models from all three manufacturers — with three exceptions — use a very simple process. Beginning with vehicle updates in the 2013 model year, simply press the Start / Stop ignition button with the Smart Key while depressing the brake to start the vehicle. If this does not work in your model, continue on below for a method that will.

Many of the images you will see on this page are numbered, which is left over from our original organization of the emergency start options.

2026 Ioniq 9

Hyundai took a step back in our opinion in 2026. If the key fob fails in the Ioniq 9, the fob must be dropped onto a spot under the heat and AC controls in front of the center console and to the right (image on the right).

The spot is marked with what we believe is the image of a key.

2026 Palisade

New 2026 Palisade models now feature two possible back-up start locations, but with no clear indication as to which one to use! It is either under the heat/AC controls in the center of the small storage area (right) or the rear cup holder (far right).

In these cases, there is no indication that the spots are actually marked!

Pre-2014 Models

Sonata

Sonata models built prior to 2014 use a slot inside the center console for an emergency  start (right). Insert the Smart Key with the key ring side out in the Smart Key holder (the slot), then press the Start / Stop ignition button while depressing the brake. To remove the key fob, press it, then pull.

Genesis

Genesis models built before 2014, and before Genesis became a separate brand, uses a slot located behind a door above the shifter (right). Insert the Key with the key ring side out and then press the Start / Stop ignition button while depressing the brake.

Again, to remove the Key, press it and then pull it out.

Equus

Older Equus models use a Smart Key holder, which is a slot in the glove box (right). Open the glove box and insert the Key with the key ring facing out and then press the Start / Stop ignition button while depressing the brake.

To remove the Key, press it and then pull it out.

Note: If you have made an attempt to start the vehicle without success, there may be residual pressure in the brake system and a new warning light may appear (left) or text message to Step on the Brake. Press the brake pedal very, very hard when trying to start the vehicle again to be sure that the release switch behind the pedal is engaged. Or wait a few minutes and try again.
