The death of a child has led to a Hyundai recall. In a press release in March, the comany announced it is recalling certain 2026 Palisade and Palisade Hybrid models due to malfunctioning power seat one-touch tilt-and-slide or automatic power fold-and-stow functions.
The company said that it is ” aware of a tragic incident involving a Palisade. While Hyundai does not yet have the full details and the incident is still under investigation, a young child lost her life. Hyundai extends its deepest sympathies to her family.”
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall number 26V160000 is titled Power Rear Seats May Trap a Person. The body of the recall announcement begins person, especially a child, may become trapped by a rear powered seat, increasing the risk of injury.
At least one already has. Palisade models in question feature Limited or Calligraphy trim packages.
To their credit Hyundai is pulling out all the stops to notify its customers noting multiple points of contact including email, vehicle telematics, outbound phone calls, media and in-app notifications and advising them to use caution when operating second and third-row power seats.
The company states that its “top priority is the safety of its customers, and additional details regarding the interim software update and final recall repair will be provided as they become available.”
A Hyundai technical service bulletin discusses a precautionary and interim action is available through an over-the-air update or at the dealership. The update will improve the software logic in the PSU (Power Seat Unit) and BDC (Body Domain Controller) to mitigate risk when operating both the 2nd and 3rd row power seat assemblies in certain Hyundai Palisade and Palisade Hybrid vehicles.
This software update will improve the automatic power-folding (stow) and tilt-and-slide (walk-in) logic for the 2nd & 3rd row seats to enhance the system’s response to contact with occupants or objects.
Hyundai adds the revised software logic serves to mitigate risk during the final remedy development phase and should not be considered an ultimate solution.
Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in the recall are searchable on NHTSA.gov and may contact the Hyundai Consumer Assistance Center at https://owners.hyundaiusa.com/us/en/contact-us.
