Gasoline prices force inflation spike

Gasoline prices

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the change in the costs faced by consumers for transportation goods and services rose a full 5% from March 2025 to March 2026. Gasoline prices were the single largest contributor.

Costs to consumers is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which itself is a measure of inflation.

Transportation overall contributed 25.0% to the 3.3% increase in the price of all goods and services per CPI.

Gasoline (all types) contributed the most, rising 18.9% year-over-year and contributing 18.1% to the annual change in the price of all goods and services.

The top three contributors to inflation from transportation in March were:

  • Gasoline (all types): +18.1%
  • Airline Fare: +4.0%
  • Motor vehicle maintenance and repair: +1.9%
