BTS transportation statistics disappoint

BTS stats.

BTS — the Bureau of Transportation Statistics — sent out its update to national transportation statistics. In it was a line for the Average Cost of Owning and Operating an Automobile.

The data does not include anything from 2026.

Nonetheless, the data shows big increases in both 2023 and 2024, which BTS chalks up to spikes in finance cost and depreciation. The was an increase of over $1,450 for the average cost to drive 15,000 miles alone in 2023. That’s an increase of nearly 14%.

If we have to wait until 2027 for any numbers from 2026, we’re in for a big spike due to fuel costs.

There are lots of additional data available in the statistics, including wages and salaries in the transportation, as well as how the industry contributes to the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in both current dollars and chained 2012 dollars.

You can find it all at this link.
