Retrieving the Mechanical Key

A Porsche key fob is shaped cleverly like a Porsche Porsche keyautomobile. Unless your key ring is flexible, take the fob off the ring to make room to remove the mechanical key. Turning over the fob, look for a small slide lever near the key ring side. Slide it to the side with a fingernail and pry the lever towards the top at the same time. Work the key out of the fob.

With newer fobs, simply push the emergency or mechanical key up and out from the back.

Now, check if a key hole is immediately visible or not…

Unlocking, Two-piece Door Handle

Porsche slotIf your Porsche has a visible key hole, simple insert the mechanical key and turn. If a key hole is not visible, look for a separation in the driver’s door handle towards the back. It marks a cover hiding the keyhole. Then look beneath the cover for a slot. Slide the mechanical key in as far up as it will go. Holding some upward pressure, pull the cover away from the car exposing the key hole.

One-piece Door Handles

Porsche liftIf a separation in the handle is not found, simply lift the handle. The key hole will be seen beneath the back of the handle. The 718, 911 and Macan have a handle like the one shown. They may have a plastic insert in the key hole that will need to be removed. Once the key hole is visible, insert the mechanical key and turn it counterclockwise. It will be awkward to get to. Then remove the key, release the handle fully and then pull it again to open. And you’re in.

Cayenne and Panamera buck up openSlip the plastic insert back into the keyhole if there was one. It is very likely protection against water infiltration and subsequent freezing in cold weather.

With one exception, the majority of other models such as the Cayenne and Panamera feature a handle that exposes the key hole when the handle is pulled to the open position, without the need to deal with an insert in the key hole (right). The handle rotates from the front. Once again, remove the key once the vehicle is unlocked, release the handle and pull to open.

Macan EV

The exception is the new Macan EV. The instructions are quite detailed and are as follows:

  • Macan EV back up openPull the driver’s door handle firmly five times beyond the first snap-in position.
  • Within ten seconds of doing so, hold the vehicle key on the area of the windshield with the vehicle identification number. See the image to the right.

The vehicle will then unlock. Note that it may take multiple attempts to get this right.

Models covered include 718, 911, 918, Cayenne, Macan, Macan EV, Panamera, and Taycan. Model years 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.
