Edmunds points to used EV market — they should know

Used EV market.

With the price of gasoline on the rise — with no end in sight — Edmunds is touting the used EV market holding some real bargains at a very good time.

Of course, Edmunds has the advantage of actually being a platform that offers cars and trucks for sale. So they actually know.

We certainly suspected and expected this when purchasing the Kia Niro 18 months ago. After about 15 years of new electric vehicle (EV) sales, and through lease programs in particular, a burgeoning used EV market was bound to develop.

Edmunds included a list of solid bargains based on original list prices versus asking prices in the pre-owned market. Interestingly, the Niro as well as the Hyundai Kona are absent from the list because they sell at a lower price when new.

But, here are some of their recommendations. Remember, they can draw directly from vehicles for sale at Edmunds.com.

Audi e-tron quattro

The Audi E-tron sold for over $74,000 on average new, and can now be had for an average price of $22,553. That’s well below its original cost. This would have been a temptation for us, except that the model’s expected range is only about 220 miles. Remember the Niro spends the entire summer well over 300 miles!

The BMW i4, while not our cup of tea, began life over $61,000 new. A pre-owned model can now be had for just over $35,000 on average. And the models hover in the 300 mile range neighborhood.

BMW’s iX is also not in our wheelhouse, but going from $94,222 to $48,929 on average is a solid bargain for someone in need of a big SUV. They too exceed 300 miles range by a lot.

Another BMW on the list is the i5. A big sedan at a good value pre-owned. The Cadillac Lyriq offers similar savings, good looks and good range numbers.

And while Hyundai’s Kona doesn’t make the list, the venerable Ioniq 5 does, along with the Ioniq 6 sibling sedan. In fact, they should be higher on Edmund’s list as they are both averaging a 50% reduction in price in the pre-owned space! Range is better with the 6, but these models offer solid Level 3 charging speeds.

The Tesla Model 3 rounds out the list, but we all know more than we need to know about the car.

If you’re considering an EV, consider a pre-owned model. And Edmunds offers a good starting point. We made a lot of use of Carvana with what we found to be consistent details and consistent high-voltage battery tests.
