CrabWalk

This is a CrabWalk Dashboard Indicator symbol. It actually appears as a row or set of bent lines that take the shape of a crab, and is seen in GMC‘s Hummer model. When the system is activated the symbol is seen in yellow/amber. CrabWalk mode allows the driver to turn the rear wheels at the same angle as the front wheels, which enables the vehicle to move diagonally.

In Crabwalk mode, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as front wheels at lower vehicle speeds and can be engaged at speeds less than 2 km/h (1.2 mph).

The symbol to the left now has a dual purpose. It was first developed as an All-wheel Steering symbol, but GMC is now using it as a CrabWalk symbol in the Sierra EV. It shows all four wheels pointing in the same direction.

Now we have a new entrant, again from GMC for the Hummer. It is King Crab Mode. It is an enhancement of CrabWalk, in that it allows the driver to turn the rear wheels at a greater angle than the front wheels. In fact, The rear wheels steer in the opposite direction as the front wheels and can be engaged at lower vehicle speeds less than 32 km/h (20 mph).

In all three cases, if the vehicle speed reaches higher than about 40 kmh (25 mph) for more than 10
seconds, the vehicle will automatically exit the crab modes and turn on Automatic Mode.

Note that the symbol to the right will also be seen in the Hummer when CrabWalk or King Crab mode is enabled. It is an All Wheel Steering symbol, and is struck through because the system is made unavailable while the vehicle is in CrabWalk mode. Click here for more.
