Low Coolant Warning Symbols — electric vehicles

Low coolant.

These are all Low Coolant Warning Indicator symbols used by electric vehicles (EVs). The symbols appear as batteries with a wavy line at the bottom and are displayed in red.

  • Before continuing, is one of these truly your symbol?? If yes, read on below.
  • Otherwise, you can return to our main Manufacturer Symbols pages and scan again!

Pure EV and hybrid batteries get hot and require a cooling system that, much like a typical internal combustion engine requires a cooling fluid that may need topping off occasionally. Add coolant to the system as soon as possible.

The elongated battery seen in the second image is often, but not always, used to differentiate from the 12-volt start battery,

Lucid seemingly threw the entire symbols regime under the bus with the use of the symbol to the left to indicate low coolant in their sedans. It is one of the original symbols that has to now been used to indicate an actual overheat in an internal combustion engine.

The symbol to the left, also featuring a wavy line at the bottom, is the traditional Low Coolant symbol is use for decades for internal combustion engines. But, as of 2024, it may be found in Kia hybrid vehicles and would be displayed when the coolant used by the vehicle’s electrical inverter is low.

It appears as a more traditional automotive radiator in yellow/amber/orange.

Driving without sufficient amount of coolant for a prolonged period of time can cause serious problems with a vehicle’s electrical equipment or the high voltage battery itself.
